The Sporting News When it comes to the recruitment of kickers and punters, the process is a bit different. Most BCS programs don’t offer a scholarship until they can see the kicker or punter in person—whether it is during the spring drill evaluation period or over the summer at camps. Also, some programs encourage walk-ons for the position, and wait to award scholarships when the player is on campus. Here are a few of the nation’s top prospects, whose recruitment will definitely be heating up in the next couple of months. Daniel Carlson Classical Academy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 6-5/190 Carlson…

Test of time The test of time is a test that every football coach faces each and every year, especially when it comes to the kicking game.  The good thing about Time is that it is the one thing, unlike talent, that all coaches have the same amount of.  So it stands to reason that those coaches who best utilize their time will have a decided advantage.  Since usage of time is one element in football that the coach can control, we have been motivated to write this book. While all coaches extol the value of the kicking game, the…

Before an athlete can be recruited…he must be found. Credible recruiting combines specializing in the kicking, punting, and long snapping field, are extremely rare and even then only a very limited number of college coaches on the national level actually attend. The athletes and coaches that do participate usually live in close proximity to the area or region of the country in which the combine is located or they are fortunate to have the financial means and time to travel great distances. This format may prove successful, but it leaves out the vast majority of the nation’s talent by not…

This story appeared in the Birmingham News Colin Anderson, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound kicker from Stephenson High in Stone Mountain, Ga., has signed with Alabama-Birmingham. Anderson, the Blazers' initial commitment in this class, will receive the chance to compete for a starting position once he arrives on campus this summer. Obviously, the Blazers were troubled in the kicking game last season and two-year starter Josh Zahn chose to give up football and return home to Arizona. Anderson is expected to compete with fellow incoming recruit Ty Long for the starting position. Returnee Trey Ragland, the team's punter the last two seasons,…

This story is from the Lancaster Eagle Gazette Tyler Tate admitted he was uncomfortable being the center of attention Wednesday. With his family, friends and coaches gathered inside the library at Bloom-Carroll, Tate signed a national letter of intent to play football at Bowling Green. The ceremony and the accompanying spotlight, however, are harbingers of what Tate can expect as a Falcons' kicker. The Bloom-Carroll senior is expected to be an immediate contributor at Bowling Green. Tate's signing accompanied a handful of local ceremonies on National Signing Day. Lancaster's Connor Smith and Nolan Flowers both signed with Ashland. Tate, a…
