Baker awaits next NFL stop

Wane.com

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Wayne (Ind.) High School graduate and 11-year NFL veteran Jason Baker is back home this weekend for his annual football camp. It's a nice distraction for a few days as the punter awaits to hear word from an NFL franchise seeking his services for the upcoming season.

After a seven-year run with the Carolina Panthers, Baker was released following the conclusion of last season. He says that he has been in serious talks with two teams and would love to land with either - but at this time was not willing to tip his hand as to where those two organizations might be.

Should Baker get the call, it will be his sixth team and 12th season at the professional level.

Packer Hall of Famer Chester Marcol

In 1972, Chester Marcol remedied a problem that had nagged the Green Bay Packers since Don Chandler’s retirement following the 1967 season. Marcol became the Packers leading scorer from 1972-74, 1976-77 and in ‘79. He led the league in scoring his rookie season and again in 1974.

The 6’0”, 190-pound Marcol was the Packers’ first soccer-style kicker. He scored 521 points during his Packers career, including 120 field goals and 155 extra points from 1972-80.

In the opening game of the 1980 season, he ran for his only touchdown on a blocked field goal to beat the Bears in overtime 12-6.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – The Ray Guy Prokicker.com camp at Ashley Ridge High School found some future standouts.

Long-snapper Alex Attaway (class of 2013) showed plenty of potential despite attending his first long-snapping camp. Prokicker.com staffer Ben Fuller was amazed at Attaway’s talent considering the lack of training.

“His stance was terrible, he did a ton of things wrong and was still impressive,” Fuller said. “He basically taught himself but had never been to a camp. I think he could help somebody. We were able to help him a lot in only one day.”

Attaway, who is from South Carolina, was named on the Prokicker.com talent search list because of that potential. He scored 19 of 30 on long-snapping accuracy and had a fast snap of 0.81. Those are the kind of statistics usually reserved for someone with training background.

“He has a lot of potential,” Fuller said. “He’s somebody people should keep an eye on.”

The same could be said for kickers Max Huggins (class of 2013) and Brady Cormier (class of 2015), said Prokicker.com staff coach Logan O’Connor. Both kickers are from South Carolina.

Huggins, from Myrtle Beach, made 80 percent of his 10 field goals and his kickoffs were consistently near the goal line or in the end zone.

“He’s got the leg and got the potential,” O’Connor said. “He can make better ball contact than he was.”

Cromier, who attends Beaufort High School, is one to watch in the future, O’Connor said.

“He had the leg from all distances,” O’Connor said. “He was 80 percent on field goals. His last two he missed were each by half a foot. He could have been 100 percent. He’s one of the better kids I’ve seen at his age as far as ball contact-wise. He has a natural leg swing.”

Cormier kickoffs sailed into the end zone once and two others were one or two yards from the goal line.

“He’s a real young guy with a lot of potential,” O’Connor said. “With some more practice and consistency, I think he’ll be one of the top guys in a couple of years here.”

punter Truett Burns (class of 2013) of South Carolina also excelled at the camp as did kicker Patrick Woods (class of 2014) of North Carolina. Burns was the hang-time winner with a 43-yard kick with a 4.14 second hang time.

Packers kicker Crosby stays motivated

By Weston Hodkiewicz / Green Bay Post Gazette

Where others see a streak, Mason Crosby sees another mountain to conquer.

In the wake of signing a five-year contract with the Green Bay Packers last July, Crosby paid his team back last season when he set a new franchise record with 23 consecutive regular-season makes (dating back to 2010).

Along with making a career-high 85.7 percent of his regular-season field goals, it added up to the most decorated season of Crosby’s five-year career.

In the process, Crosby tied his franchise record with a 56-yard field

goal against Atlanta in Week 5 and broke it with a 58-yard kick in a 33-27 win against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7.

For all the successes, there were a few failures — missing an extra point and four field-goal tries, including one that hit the right upright against Tampa Bay to end his streak on Nov. 23.

Mix it together and that’s the motivation Crosby needs entering next season.

“There are always one or two things you can just improve on,” said Crosby prior to the start of the Packers Tailgate Tour Tuesday. “Obviously, I didn’t make every kick, so definitely that’s a new goal, and now I have a number, a mountain-in-a-row, that I can try to eclipse. There’s always things you set and try to get better with.”

It’s hard to find much fault in Crosby’s 2011 campaign. He finished fourth in league scoring with 140 points and surpassed 80 percent in field-goal efficiency for the first time in his career.

Crosby also took advantage of the new NFL rule that moved kickoffs forward to the 35-yard line, finishing third in the league with 49 touchbacks.

Crosby credits most of that success to the continuity between him, punter/holder Tim Masthay and long snapper Brett Goode, who has spent the last four seasons with Crosby.

Although the NFL’s new offseason program rules didn’t allow Crosby or Masthay to kick during the first two weeks of offseason workouts in April, the trio practiced on its own at St. Norbert College and various area high schools.

During the last three weeks, the three has practiced with the team. Crosby has ramped up his kicking during individual player workouts, which are three times a week.

The late start might not be ideal, but it beats last summer when the lockout washed out OTAs.

“This offseason has been good to have Brett and Tim,” Crosby said. “We’ve already been able to work together and get the operation going again. This is three years now with these guys. As far as consistency goes and being in May only, and being able to go out and feel comfortable with that operation is definitely a positive. It’s something I’m going to build off of from last year.”

After moving kickoffs up last season, there has been talk of eliminating kickoffs completely given the NFL’s recent emphasis on avoiding concussions and player safety.

New York Giants owner John Mara, who is a member of the league’s competition committee, admitted he’d be in favor of such a move last month and that conversations have taken place about potentially throwing out the play entirely.

Crosby is all for safety and the long-term health of players, but takes pride in one of the defining features of his craft. Until a declaration is submitted, however, he’s concentrating on building upon last season.

“It’s definitely something I look at, guys’ safety is so important,” Crosby said. “For a kicker, I obviously don’t want to eliminate part of my job for kickoffs. I think it’s part of the game. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen. For me, I’m going to keep kicking off as long as I’m called to do that.”

Victoria Times Colonist

When Westshore Rebels kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk found out Thursday evening that he has been invited to B.C. Lions rookie camp he did what any serious, aspiring athlete would do - party like a rock star.

"Nah, it was just a small celebration," the 21-year-old said with a chuckle of a call received from the defending Grey Cup champions.

Van Gylswyk joins fellow B.C. Football Conference products, quarterback Jordan Yantz of the Vancouver Island Raiders, defensive lineman Steve Doege and receiver Danny Turek of the Okanagan Sun for rookie camp, slated for May 30 to June 1 in Kamloops.

"I'm excited. If I can take just one thing away from this I'll be happy," said Van Gylswyk. "I'm just going to take it in stride. I'm just looking at it as an opportunity and see what I can make of it."

Van Gylswyk, the BCFC's all-star punter last season, recently attended a Lions' evaluation camp along with Rebels' teammates Kyle Daeschel and Rob Smith (offensive linemen), defensive lineman Sam Narkaj, running backs Greg Morris and Niles Goguen, and linebacker Colton Farago.

There is some discussion that the Lions might still invite Morris or Smith to rookie camp as well.

Van Gylswyk will attend as one of two kickers, along with Lions' draft pick Hugh O'Neill, who was selected out of the University of Alberta last season.

Lions' starting kicker Paul McCallum, 42, is getting a little long in the tooth, but is coming off a fantastic season. This will be his 21st

year in the CFL.

Former Jet punter weighs in on Sanchez

Cindy Borlen / The Washington Post

Not that former punters get to have a vote on the matter of whether Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow is better suited to be the New York Jets'  starting quarterback, but Steve Weatherford added his two cents to the debate anyway.

Weatherford, who jumped from the Jets to the Giants in time to get a Super Bowl ring, said in an NFL.com podcast that Sanchez hasn’t matured.

“I like Mark — I think he's a very talented quarterback — but from my standpoint, I haven't seen a lot of maturation. When you're a quarterback and you come in, and you're expected to be the face of the franchise, and you're expected to lead the team ... that's a lot to take on as a rookie,” said Weatherford, a Sanchez teammate in 2009 and 2010. “But as the years go on, I think you're expected to mature, skill-wise, and also mature as a leader, and to be honest with you, as much as I like the guy, I just haven't seen that.”

The Jets may have said that Sanchez is the starter, but there’s a lot of support for Tebow. Although Darrelle Revis said both quarterbacks are “dangerous,” he raved about Tebow’s leadership qualities.

“Some people have it. Some guys don't,” Revis said of Tebow. “It's the passion within ... of him wanting to be a leader, wanting to win. You see it in him all the time ... eating lunch, walking down the hallway — you see it. He's just one of those guys. He's very positive. He has passion for what he does and you could see it.

“You can see it on him when you have a conversation with him. He's just a leader.”

At least Sanchez has Joe Namath — and possibly film — on his side.

“The one-eyed monster tells no lies,” Namath said. “That's how they practice, how they play — on tape. On that camera. It doesn't have a voice. Every player, every coach can see the execution, who's working right, who isn't working right, who isn't working as well as they should. That'll be the deciding factor.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers tried out former Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots long snapper Matt Katula, according to a league source.

Katula, 29, played in five games last season for the Minnesota Vikings, filling in when Cullen Loeffler broke a bone in his lower back.

A former Wisconsin player, Katula played with the Ravens from 2005 to 2009 and played eight games two years ago for the Patriots.

For his career, the 6-foot-6, 265-pounder has played in 93 games.

Monday was Jeremy Shelley Day in Raleigh, and the University of Alabama kicker had a surprise in store for the Raleigh City Council -- his championship rings.

Mayor Nancy McFarlane read a proclamation honoring him, recalling his years at Broughton High playing both soccer and football for the Caps.

Shelley decided to walk on at the University of Alabama and earned the starting job as a kicker as a junior in 2011. He made five field goals in the Tides' 21-0 victory over LSU in the BCS Championship Game in January.

It was Alabama's second national title with Shelley on campus -- the Tide also won the title after the 2009 season.

Shelley shared his championship rings with the City Council on Monday, which brought some gasps and comments like "Wow!" from the normally staid council. One council member joked that the rings might not make it back to him as they were passed around the table.

"Mayor, that's what you call serious bling," said another.

"You going to Tweet that?" another quipped to McFarlane.

"We're very, very proud of you and proud you are representing our community," McFarlane said to McFarlane. "I'm pretty sure [the rings] will make it back to you."

So Monday was Jeremy Shelley Day in Raleigh … but then again, when you've nailed five field goals for the Tide in the national title game, every day is your day in Alabama.

Arizona signs veteran kicker-punter

The Arizona Cardinals signed four players, including kicker/punter Ricky Schmitt, who has Prokicker.com connections. Schmitt, who is 6-2 and 217 pounds, has only attempted a few kicks in the league with the 49ers. He's spent much of his time in the league on practice squads on Pittsburgh and Oakland.
